God chosen fast

A message on fasting built on Isaiah 58. It answers what fasting is, when it is needed, what kinds there are, which fast God rejects, and which fast He has chosen. It aims to turn a disciple from fasting for show or for self to a fast that breaks a yoke and opens the hand.

"Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?"

Isaiah 58:6, NKJV

Overview

This message teaches that a fast God accepts empties the stomach and the self, and then opens the hand to others. It begins with Jesus' words in Matthew 6, "when you fast," and moves through six points: what fasting is, when it is needed, the body God made, the kinds of fasts, the fast God rejects, and the fast God has chosen in Isaiah 58.

It teaches by contrast. Fasting is not a diet, not a hunger strike against God, not a way to earn anything, and not proof of spirituality. It names six marks of a rejected fast and the one root under them. It gives ten moments in Scripture when God's people fasted, and plain guidance for those who must be careful, including a Daniel fast or a technology fast.

The message includes a closing, an altar response, personal application, a before, during, and after guide, leadership application, discussion questions, reflection prompts, and a short 4R response. It can be read alone, used in a family or cell group, or preached. Leaders can use it to prepare a church fast that ends in an act of mercy.

Lessons

01 When You FastWhat fasting is, what it is not, and who it is for.In short. Jesus said "when you fast," not "if," so fasting is part of a disciple's life. It is not a diet, not a way to earn anything, and not proof of spirituality. It aims to train the appetite, break dependence on what rules us, and turn the heart to God in secret.
02 When Fasting Is NeededTen moments in Scripture when God's people fasted. In short. Scripture gives no fasting calendar, but it gives moments: returning to God, facing danger, seeking direction, carrying a burden, feeling God is far, and unbelief. It is not only a panic button for a crisis. The lesson aims to make a disciple fast to get close to God, not just to get out of trouble.
03 The Body God MadeWhat science shows, and who must be careful. In short. God made the body to go without food for a time, and medical research is noticing it. This is not a reason to fast for health, and the Bible does not need a laboratory. The body is a temple to steward, so some believers should speak to a doctor and choose a partial fast.
04 Kinds of FastsNormal, partial, absolute, corporate, private, couple, technology, and dependence fasts. In short. Scripture shows several kinds of fasts. They differ in what is set aside, how long, and who joins, but each is done before God. A long fast is not the only real fast, and a phone fast does not replace food when the body is able.
05 The Fast God RejectsSix marks of a fast that God refuses. In short. In Isaiah 58:3-5 Israel fasted but served self, ignored injustice, fought each other, and fasted for show. All of it comes from one root: they fasted to use God, not to meet Him. The lesson aims to expose a hungry but unhumbled heart.
06 The Fast God Has ChosenBreak the yoke, open the hand, stop the pointing finger. In short. God did not cancel fasting in Isaiah 58. He moved it from the stomach to the heart, and from the heart to the hand. It is not a replacement for fasting from food, and it is not social work with prayer added. The lesson aims for a disciple who breaks the yoke in himself, gives to others, and guards his tongue.
