God chosen fast
A message on fasting built on Isaiah 58. It answers what fasting is, when it is needed, what kinds there are, which fast God rejects, and which fast He has chosen. It aims to turn a disciple from fasting for show or for self to a fast that breaks a yoke and opens the hand.
"Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?"
Isaiah 58:6, NKJVOverview
This message teaches that a fast God accepts empties the stomach and the self, and then opens the hand to others. It begins with Jesus' words in Matthew 6, "when you fast," and moves through six points: what fasting is, when it is needed, the body God made, the kinds of fasts, the fast God rejects, and the fast God has chosen in Isaiah 58.
It teaches by contrast. Fasting is not a diet, not a hunger strike against God, not a way to earn anything, and not proof of spirituality. It names six marks of a rejected fast and the one root under them. It gives ten moments in Scripture when God's people fasted, and plain guidance for those who must be careful, including a Daniel fast or a technology fast.
The message includes a closing, an altar response, personal application, a before, during, and after guide, leadership application, discussion questions, reflection prompts, and a short 4R response. It can be read alone, used in a family or cell group, or preached. Leaders can use it to prepare a church fast that ends in an act of mercy.
